This associate degree is designed to address workforce shortages in law enforcement, public safety, and community service by equipping students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for entry- to mid-level roles. The program provides a broad understanding of career pathways in these fields, distinguishing them from adjacent human services roles.Students will develop critical competencies such as judgment, problem-solving, communication, conflict resolution, and cultural competencyskills essential for professionals in law enforcement, fire services, emergency dispatch, corrections, and community-based social service roles. Coursework also emphasizes professionalism, ethics, and relevant technologies to enhance employability and career readiness.Graduates of this program will be prepared for roles such as:Community Services Coordinator, Specialist, or Navigator in nonprofit or government agencies, 911 Dispatcher or Emergency Communications Specialist, Social Services Practitioner in areas such as housing, benefits, youth services, and career navigation, or entry-level positions in fire services, law enforcement, and correctional facilities. Additionally, this program provides a potential pathway for individuals interested in law enforcement careers who must meet age requirements (typically 20.5 years) before applying. The degree is designed to support continued education, allowing students to seamlessly transition into multiple Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) programs, including Bates BAS in Public Safety. Partnerships with agencies and employers will also facilitate the development of specialized certificate programs to meet evolving industry needs.
